Hue Salon: A teaching salon (A look inside a Houston salon apprenticeship program)

Hue Salon has been ranked in Houston Business Journal Best Place to Work contest for the last two years (2020 and 2021). There are a lot of reasons behind the award but one of the biggest ones goes back to our roots of being a teaching salon.

What is a teaching salon?

Education is what drives the best hairdressers. Trends are constantly changing and continuing education that allows for growth and development in a stylist’s craft is always a top priority. This is especially true for new stylists just out of cosmetology school. Being able to apprentice at a salon that has an education program developed for new stylists will ensure not only happy clients but a successful career.

Hue Salon’s Apprentice Program

Our apprentices participate in a one-of-a-kind curriculum based education program, while assisting stylists and perfecting their craft before making the transition to full-time stylist. On average, our apprentices are in the program about a year and a half, as we are not departmentalized and train in both cutting and color. Throughout the program, apprentices have the opportunity to earn days on the floor to perform certain services, allowing them to start building a clientele.

The program is divided into phases, with technical evaluations as the apprentices move forward. A lot of learning also comes from daily life around the salon. Our apprentices assist everyone in the salon and are hands-on assisting with shampoos, toners, glazes, etc, helping stylists stay efficient in a fast paced environment.

The apprenticeship at Hue Salon is rigorous, and being self-motivated with a strong work ethic is a must. Apprentices are required to find their own models throughout the education program journey. Having an understanding of the importance of self-marketing as a crucial part of being a successful stylist is important. Hundreds of hours of practice are required in the program, both in salon and at home.

After the Program…

Once the program is completed and the final evaluations are passed, our apprentices transition to full time stylists. Our stylists are not independent contractors. Unlike some other salon companies, Hue Salon is a commission based salon. Our stylists earn a competitive commission pay rate with no deductions, monthly one-on-one business coaching, and continuing in-salon education by national L’Oreal Professionnel artists throughout the year.

Hue Salon is a performance based salon. Our stylists earn promotions based on meeting service sales goals, retail sales goals, and pre-booking goals. Promotions at Hue are not based on company seniority or years of experience, but on the demand of each stylist's time.

Hue Salon is a Montrose institution. Having been near the corner of Montrose and Westheimer in Houston, TX for almost ten years, clients are drawn to us from the neighborhood, the Greater Houston Area, and even nationally and internationally. We are known for our friendly customer service, high-end hairstyling, and team-oriented atmosphere.
